Cannero Riviera to Cannobio

Sunday May 5

Ferries make regular stops along the lake, and aside from a few sailboats, account for what little lake traffic there is at this northern end. We began our hike by taking the ferry from Cannobio to Cannero Riviera via Maccagno and Luino. It was a beautiful day to be on the lake, the sun warming in the still cool air. We crossed the lake to the other two towns where there was a beautiful church up on the mountainside, then back across to Cannero, another picturesque waterfront town. The rhododendron, azaleas, wisteria, and wildflowers are in full bloom. As we walked along the lido and up through the town, the colors and fragrance were overwhelming. The trail was well marked and "paved" in parts through lush green, the sound of waterfalls and birds in our ears with glimpses of Cannero behind. Our first stop was Camine Superiore where we lunched on the balcony of the frescoed Chiesa di San Gottardo (1332), with an amazing panorama of the lake before us and frescoes (Adoration of the Magi) above. Taking a detour up the very steep and less traveled trail to Viggiona, we met some tiny ponies and waited out a rain shower under the dome of the church portico. Downhill from here, we passed through the small hamlet of Molineggi, then on to some beautiful views of Cannobio from above.
