Friday May 3
By 9am the square is bustling. With Rick Steve's audio as our guide, we surveyed the square and decided to take the elevator to the top of the Campanile for a bird's eye view. The square below, the clock tower, the roof of the basilica, the island church of San Giorgio Maggiore, our hotel in the upper right corner, the huge bell above us, give perspective to this mysterious city of intrigue. What happens in Venice, stays in Venice. Down below, these details that catch my eye: the clock on the tower with it's astrological signs, the photogenic lions, symbol of Venice, the facade of St. Mark's basilica with it's columns of different marbles from the reaches of the empire, the purple marble tetrarchs guarding the Doge's palace, the columns of the Piazzetta - the Venetian lion and St. Theo killing the alligator, and of course, the gondolas!
