From the 14th century, The Royal Road connected the mountain towns between Bellagio, at the tip of the peninsula, to Como at the end of the western arm of the lake. We started by taking the ferry to Pognana Lario and from there, walking back to Torno, we encountered a series of quaint, mountain towns, each with it's own amazing church. We stopped in each one, to contemplate it's beauty and uniqueness, to feel each town's spirit, and to just enjoy the cool quiet, a respite from the hot mid-day sun. Each town was separated by deep, green woods graced by waterfalls and sunny meadows of wildflowers. In order, the towns and churches were: The church at Pognana Lario with it's view down the lake and the Via Crucis shrines to the Chiesa di San Rocco, a waterfall at the Valle di Frigirola, the town of Palanzo and it's gray stone Chiesa di San Ambrogio, the view toward Lemna and it's yellow Chiesa di San Giorgio, lunch at the waterfall of Valle di Portolo, the view back across a luscious meadow toward sun touched Lemna, and finally the delightful square of Molina, full of activity - a teenager lounging, grandmothers excited about some keys being raised on a fishing line right in front of Tom, the marvelous Via Crucis painted around the altar of Chiesa di San Antonio, then down by the San Rocco chapel to the Chiesa di San Giovanni in Torno. What an extraordinary day!
