In 896 AD, nomadic tribes from the Urals of Russia settled in what is now Hungary. After many disputes, they made a blood bonded alliance under oner leader, Arpad, whose dynasty ruled until the 13th century. Around 1000 AD, Istvan (formerly Vajk) accepted Christianity for the united Magyar (Hungarian) tribes and became their first crowned king. So the column at the center of Hero Square, created in 1896 for the first millennium celebration, is topped by the angel Gabriel holding the crown of Istvan (also known as St. Stephen) and the apostolic cross, signifying Hungary's conversion to Christianity. At the base of the column there are seven equestrian statues - Arpad and the six tribal leaders of the Magyar. Two curved colonnades embrace the column - center left War faces Peace and at the ends, Labor and Prosperity balance Knowledge and Glory. The colonnades are lined with other heroes, but for now, that's far as far as I go with this history.
