On our way to the Cinque Terre, we decided to explore the Franciacorta region of Lombardy near Brescia and Lake Iseo. In the small town of Erbusco, we found some information at the Wine Consortium, but still couldn't figure out how to get on a winery tour. Not having much luck with the GPS, we turned into a vineyard, and went in the modern building, a wine cellar, just off the main road. Well, that truly was a cellar, and after trying to make ourselves understood, the man made a phone call and directed us to another vineyard down the road. We were met at the door of the office by Jessica Vezzoli, daughter of the owner and master mixer, Giuseppe Vezzoli, for our private tour. She gave us a great tour answering all our questions about the production of this sparkling champagne like wine, from Chardonnay and/or Pinot Noir or Blanc grapes, unattainable in the US. Afterwards, Jessica offered a sample, but couldn't open the bottle. Giuseppe obliged, and we all tasted, along with two oenologists.
