North around Lake Maggiore, the Swiss border is crossed at Brissago. We weren't even stopped. It was a glorious day, so after a little fun with the GPS in Lucarno, we arrived at the pilgrimage church of Madonna del Sasso (rock) perched high a crag on the spot where in 1480 the Virgin Mary appeared to a Franciscan priest. Ciseri's Transport of Christ to the Sepulcher was particularly beautiful. From here we took the cable car up to Cardada, where a suspended observation platform offered stunning views of the entire lake and the surrounding alps. Higher up still, we're rode the chair lift to Cimetta, a ski slope in winter and a take off point for hang gliders in summer!
