From the basilica tower (305 steps) we could see all of our favorite Budapest landmarks, now like old friends guiding our explorations. The square in front of the basilica is large and was a happening place on Saturday - a photo shoot, a flash mob, a wedding and lot of people. Today, however, we were able to climb the tower, enjoy an exhibit of the painting priest, Popel Peter, and see the relic, the mummified right hand of King Istvan (St. Stephen). Sounds gruesome, but I was fascinated by the authentication pictures and how the relic was smuggled out of Hungary when the Nazi's invaded in 1944. "The Invisible Bridge" is now coming back to me! For an added treat, the Black Madonna and Child icon was on display in the chancel.
